Bridge – On the afternoon of May 7, Ms.
Pham Thi Ngot, 53, died at the clinic of Ba To district in the central province
of Quang Nam. This is the 20th person who died of the unknown skin disease.
A local
official, Mr. Pham Van But, said that four people in Ms. Ngot’s family
contacted the unknown disease.
But
added that local people were afraid of catching the disease so they did not
dare attend Ngot’s funeral.
According
to Ba To Clinic, 31 patients who caught the unknown skin disease, including
four serious cases which are being treated at the clinic and some hospitals.
In
addition, in the first week of May, there were 13 new patients in Ba Dien
commune, raising the total number of patients to 190 so far.
Quang
Ngai authorities have asked the government to supply 250 tons of rice to people
in five communes which have patients, with 15kg/person/month, within six
months.
Earlier,
health experts doubted moldy rice that local residents used as the agent that
caused the unknown disease.
Another
mission of the Ministry of Health will go to Ba Dien commune to investigate the
strange disease.
