About 200,000 people suffer from strokes every year in Vietnam, and half
of them die, according to statistics from the Vietnam Association for Fighting
Cerebrovascular Complications.
The figures were released at
yesterday’s conference titled “Brain Stroke – A Global Issue” at the People’s
115 Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
Speaking at the event, Dr Phan
Van Bau, director of the hospital, blamed stress in life and hurried daily
meals as the main causes of strokes in general.
Stroke patients can recover from
the disease and return to normal life if their health problem is discovered
early and treated well and in time, Bau said.
Dr Nguyen Huy Thang, deputy head
of the hospital’s cerebral vascular pathology deportment, said there is an
increasingly large number of young people suffering from strokes in Vietnam.
The hospital has received and
treated stroke patients who were under 20 years old, Thang said.
A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident
(CVA), is the rapid loss of brain function(s) due to a disturbance in the blood
supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia (lack of blood flow) caused by
blockages (thrombosis, arterial embolism), or a hemorrhage.
As a result, the affected area of
the brain cannot function, which might result in the inability to move one or
more limbs on one side of the body, inability to understand or formulate
speech, or inability to see one side of the visual field.
